Match Making in my Studio
Pairing the Right Prints with the Right Patterns
There’s a moment every fashion designer knows all too well.
You walk into a market (or your favorite online shop)…
Your eyes lock onto that Ankara print — the one bursting with color, rhythm, energy, story.
You feel the inspiration hit your chest like lightning.
You see it as a skirt, a jumpsuit, a show-stopping jacket — instant love.
And then reality steps in.
You pull out the fun new pattern you’ve been dying to try — flirty sleeves, a dramatic peplum, maybe a structured bodice — and after that initial rush of excitement, you realize…
Oooooh no.
This fabric and this pattern do NOT love each other back!!!
🧵 When Beauty Isn’t Compatible
Over the past few years, building Samson7arts, I’ve learned that not every gorgeous Ankara print belongs in every style template.
Some prints are:
✨ too bold for a busy pattern
✨ too directional to be chopped into tiny pieces
✨ too stiff for a draped silhouette
✨ too soft for a structured bodice
✨ too magical to disappear under darts, seams, and trims
Certain fabrics demand respect — they tell you exactly what they want (and what they refuse to do!)
📌 The “Pattern Parking Lot”
So yes — I have piles of breathtaking Ankara prints waiting patiently with no pattern assigned.
And the opposite is also true — I collect
✓ patterns
✓ silhouettes
✓ clever design hacks
with no fabric selected yet.
There’s a sweet spot where the right fabric finally meets the right shape — but it usually doesn’t happen on the first try.
🌐 The Search for Inspiration
My secret weapon: Pinterest.
I scroll.
I save.
I compare.
I imagine.
Then I dive deeper.
I study:
✔ how seams land on large-scale prints
✔ how bodices break up artwork
✔ how movement affects pattern repeat
✔ what needs to be simplified
✔ what should be enhanced
Sometimes the pattern stays as-is.
Sometimes I hack it — change the neckline, remove pockets, add a band, reshape a hem — because Ankara fabric loves to speak its own language.
🧠 Design Isn’t Just Sewing — It’s Problem Solving
This part of my process has taught me something:
Fashion isn’t only about choosing materials—
it’s about listening to them.
Each print has a personality.
Each silhouette carries a mood.
And my job is to bring harmony between the two.
🌺 The Samson7arts Promise
Every time you see one of my pieces —
a maxi skirt, a tote bag, a halter top, a vest, a statement necklace —
just know:
Behind it stood:
🎯 a pile of “almosts”
🎯 a handful of maybes
🎯 a little frustration
🎯 a spark of magic
🎯 and a final yes between fabric and form
It’s not just sewing.
It’s matchmaking.
It’s storytelling.
It’s art.
And that’s the treasure of working with Ankara —
the fabric challenges you, surprises you, and rewards you when you finally get it right.
Keep following for more of when I get it right!
